A lot of little touch ups and small additions. Here's a list:

- Fixed game over screen to print the score and writes "New High Score" if one was achieved.

- Added the remaining sounds into the game including finding new nuclear thrust and power up sounds.

- Moved the health and energy bars down the screen to fit the new interface.

- Recieved the animation for getting powerups from jimmy after we designed it and then added into game.

 

Stuff left to do:

- Music and sounds for the nyan cat transform

- Rearrange some text in the ship select menu

- Add the introduction story into the game including writing the story out.

- Adding a company logo to the beginning of the game

- Come up with ship names

- Few more different thought bubble messages and extend the time between them

- Add ships to the high scores screens for which ship got which high score.

Pretty happy with these. They needed to stand out from the rest of the game so players knew that they didnt have to avoid these like they do planets and asteroids and they also fit the color theme of the menus and interface.

We have a power up for:

Refueling

Repairing

Double Points

Transforming

Zooming the screen out.

I havent been blogging as I have been furiously trying to finish the game before the beta presentation. Now that that, and my computer course, is out of the way what do I have left to do?

- Add fade outs to the end of the cutscenes.

- Get rotating planets working.

- Power up icons and working in game

- Pop up thought bubbles and working in game

- Additional skins for special ships and hidden extras.

So turns out that 20 frames was way too many for stencyl so I have reduceed them to 6. Since the animations between menu icons only lasts .3 of a second 6 frames looks fine.

Today's job is doing a new background image, end game screen and about page.

Oh my god. So three attempts later and the main menu is finished, animated, sprited and in game. And may I just say that it looks amazing. If there were gaming menu awards, this would probably win at least three.

But suprise suprise, once again Stencyl has ruined my dream of making the highest quality game ever. Apparently 50 frames per second for a 1280x720 animation sprite is too amazing for it to handle. So close to beating Peter Jackson's the Hobbit for highest quality movie ever made.

Finished the text using the ethnocentric font and these effects, in case anyone wants to replicate,:

text font - 48px on 1000x500 image

inner glow - 100% opac, color: 57bbb5, choke - 0, size 4px

outer glow - 100% opac, color : 5a90bd, spread - 9%, size 5px

Also whipped up a mock up for the interface. Originally I was going to have the interface at the top of the screen however as the game is already more difficult when traveling in the y direction (due to the lack of space to see oncoming space) I moved it to the sides.

So, instead of rotating the asteroids in game I thought it would be easier to just animate them rotating. This leaves their direction the same which makes life so much easier for the movement system we have.

got two ideas for the asteroids
1. might take some pictures of it going around its centre axis so it can be animated to be spinning
2. it shouldnt get destroyed when it hits the plane but fly through and just have a small camera shake on collision

Zach says adding a camera shake wont be a problem so tonight I shall get some more images of the asteroids at different angles.

After struggling to make Jimmy's ships look realistic I thought about why this was. Due to the fact that we both have different art styles, mine being quite realistic and his being very cartoony, there was an imediate problem with the contrast of ships to planets. It would be almost impossible for me to render the ships to match the style of the planets without redrawing Jimmy's ships. Since that would be rude and more work than I had intended I am now vectorising and image tracing the planets using 16 color schemes to create more cartoony ships. This new direction has sparked more excitement in the game as there is no need to worry about trying to get everything spot on. Now we can relax a little bit and just make a really good game.

Introducing the NightHawk (the rocket fuel ship).

The nightHawk was drawn and designed by Jimmy and rendered by myself.
