As soon as I read the project brief I had one instant idea for the third project.

Back in 2008 I did an art panel based on silouettes of bugs from New Zealand and one type of bug stuck in my mind. The Arachnocampa luminosa. A type of glowworm native to New Zealand. What brought it to my attention is the way to catches prey. It extends down long lines (called fishing lines) made of silk. These lines are then used to catch flies and other flying insects when they touch it.

It is these lines of silk that I had an idea about. The beauty of the glowing effect and the way they are made interests me greatly.

The use of hierachy and repition of the next project is what instantly reminded me of these fishing lines. Hopefully I intend to replicate a similar type of lone repeating line of shapes which would be able to swing around, maybe through interaction, and I can use rotate and translate to do this.

Obviously this is all still in the concept stage but I wanted to write about them anyways.

Concept 1

My first idea, based on Theo Jansen's sand walkers was to create a walker myself. I based it loosely on the weird head/spider toy from Toy Story 1. I remember it being a really scary concept and I wanted to play on that. By using similar techniques of moving limbs that Theo has used I could create a really interesting mobile character. This character would have been a rogue creation from a craftsmen, or kid, and have to explore its surroundings, perhaps try and reach a place which it cannot access.

Concept 2

My second concept was similar to the first in that I wanted to take a creation and put it in an environment. This character was based off a crafts manequin and I used a lot of steam punk infulences to create artificial limbs and intelligence for it. The idea behind this character was for it to wake up on a captain's desk, see a strange light (inspired by AWOLnations Sail video) and attempt to reach it. However, it would end in devastation.

Concept 3

My talking to the tutors and discussing the difference between inanimate and animate I decided to not focus on creating a humanoid character but to focus on just seperate limbs. I already had a mock storyboard done up for a humourous wily coyote esque situation where a character would open a door, so I decided to go with a hand instead of a foot. The hand was the obvious choice but I thought the foot would lead to less interesting situations within the given environment. This hand was also mechanicalized, to suit the steam punk theme from the last concept.

My concept for the first 242 project is to create an interesting animation using a similar 'op art' effect to the picture above.

The circle (sphere) will move around the screen manipulating the lines to create an interesting to look at animation.

I should also look at playing around with color, speeds and line widths.

Concept_3
In this concept I looked at the idea of duplicating forms.

A form, for this example a cylinder, will be strangley manipulated to form a sphere. This is done by rotating the bottom part of the cylinder up and outwards creating an outer 'shell' around the original forms location. I got this idea from thinking about people walking between and around the split cow piece below.

The sphere can then move around a bit. 'Breathing' or vibrating to show that things are happening to it. It will be at this point that the sphere will begin to split apart, nearly pulling apart the whole form.

This can create more spheres or other forms.

One potential idea is to just pull out different parts of the sphere to create a very unique spiky form.

I am unsure where to go from here though.

Mon, 12 Mar 2012 14:17:00 -0700 Concept 2 for MDDN241 Project 1 http://loxyreid.posterous.com/concept-2-for-mddn241-project-1 http://loxyreid.posterous.com/concept-2-for-mddn241-project-1

The idea behind this concept is changing the material from something strong and unnatural to somthing soft and very natural.

A metallic form, from the second image here, will begin suspended in space. This mesh like material is very strong and connected. It will be hard to manipulate this material in real life. The form should move about and change shape surreally.

I would like the meshed form to shatter and explode like glass would. This is not something that the mesh would do naturally and therefore should be interesting to see happen. The idea that a solid connected form could shatter shouldnt happen.

Each of the shattered pieces of glass, a mix between strong and soft material, should fly away from the forms origin until they imbed themselves in the surrounding surfaces. Each piece will get stuck in the surfaces.

Finally each piece of glass should transform to a very natural material, such as moss. Moss is a natural material which is very soft and easily manipulated, a nice contrast to the starting material.

Concept_1
In my first concept for project one I am taking inspiration from the second and third precedents located below.

The idea is to have a sphere made of a very easy to break material, I am thinking water or perhaps the sphere could be a bubble for the see through aspect. An incision will be made in the sphere and this cut will be manipulated to become larger. A solid material, perhaps sand or lead filings will fall out of the inside of the sphere. This can be interesting because this solid material seems to be coming from within the water or bubble, which is impossible. It is all about changing people perspective of what the sphere actually is. By assuming that it is hollow the viewer can be shocked by the apperance of another material.

Once the sphere has 'deflated' and all the strong material is sprayed all over a surface underneath, I am not sure what to do with the material. I am thinking about manipulating the material into wierd shapes or to make it 'breath'. This can be fixed with more thinking and discussing.
