Description of Mr Palmer and Environment from my animation :- “A Badly Handled Situation”

My character for this animation is based off a purple knitted woolen glove. He is named Mr. Palmer or Palmy for short is an adventurous, outgoing expeditioner. Being made to withstand insanely low temperatures, Palmy prefers to stay outdoors and explore the winter wonderland. He dislikes being indoors as he can't stand the heat! Palmy is also determined, once he starts on a task he is guaranteed to try as many times to finish the task or die in the process. Although he is determined, he is not the most intelligent glove in drawer. He has crazy wild ideas which don't always end up the way he intended, but his determination shows us a serious side to his childish manner. Palmy is usually cautious when out travelling and therefore, whilst looking a little worn down, he is still completely intact. He has a complex relationship with his owner. He enjoys going on great adventures skiing and sledding with his owner, however Palmy has noticed that his love is not returned. He is frequently thrown across the room when his role is done and is constantly left lying in remote unknown locations. Not only does this make him sad but he finds himself wondering why he is not treated better.

In the animation we find Palmy trapped inside a room. His owner has just left the room leaving Palmy behind. The room in which the animation plays out is a young child's room, with bright blue walls and light brown carpet. It has white bookshelves, complete with many assorted books and family portraits. This bookshelf is located up against the wall next to a large full sized wooden door. The door has a metallic lever handle. The walls of the room are decorated with pictures and a few children's toys are spread out in the corners of the room and along the floor.

Script for “A Badly Handled Situation”

ñ Fade in.

ñ The Camera pans along facing the wall. We see a bookcase and a door.

ñ Palmy appears from the right and walk along towards the left of the screen.

ñ Upon noticing the door Palmy stares at the handle wondering how he can open it.

ñ Palmy tries to jump up to reach the handle but can't reach it.

ñ Fade out and in.

ñ We now see Palmy up on the bookcase near the door handle.

ñ Palmy attempts to jump to grab the handle but slips on the handle and falls to the floor

ñ Fade out and in.

ñ A badly stacked set of boxes is shown creating a ladder to the door handle.

ñ Palmy pushes the last box from off the bookcase onto the stack. The stack wobbles.

ñ Palmy jumps out onto the stack of boxes. They crumble under its weight.

ñ The boxes and Palmy fall to the floor.

ñ Fade out and in.

ñ There is a skateboard resting in a see saw like position with Palmy on it.

ñ A bowling ball rolls off the bookcase and falls to the skateboard.

ñ The skateboard breaks in half since the ball is too heavy.

ñ Palmy looks at the broken skateboard sadly.

ñ Fade out and in.

ñ A set of gunpowder barrels are set up against the door with the dynamite press on the right.

ñ Palmy presses the switch, however the switch and Palmy explode instead of the barrels.

ñ Fade out and in.

ñ Palmy flies past the screen from right to left holding a lit blow torch.

ñ Fade out and in.

ñ Palmy, in the middle of the screen, stares at the handle. He looks sad.

ñ Palmy begins to walk off to the right. As he nears the edge of the screen the door opens suddenly causing Palmy to be crushed into the wall.

ñ The door closes revealing Palmy imprinted in the wall.

ñ Fade out.

ñ Credits roll.

ñ Fade in.

ñ From the right side of the screen we see a cannon be pushed into the screen by Palmy.

ñ Fade out.

ñ Fin.

Further development of the hand character:

It has come to my attention that the character and storyboard don't really fit together very well. The environment and animation idea are quite cartoony and humours whilst the mechanical hand has a very serious feeling to it. It is not the way I want to go about this animation. Therefore I am going to have to change my idea. Sadly this means no steam punk theme but I feel that the combination of environment, storyboard and a more cartoony hand would be much stronger than my original concept. Since only the material has changed, Theo Jansen's work is still a strong precedent to how I intend to animate the hand. Oh and I have moved away from the hand idea to a more glove oriented character. This moves the character away from human and into the inanimate world. This new idea has generated lots of interesting points, the lack of weight in the glove being a strong one.

Similar to Theo Jansen's work which I had been looking at I also wanted to incorporate a steam punk theme. I have always been a huge fan of steam punk themed projects. Some examples are Eye of the Storm by Christopher Alender (some screenshots shown here), or the movie "9". I really like the mechanical look to it and the inclusion of cogs and time based equiptment. I wanted to use these ideas to mechanicalize my own character. This way, as well as involving Jansens walkers, I could create interesting ways of moving characters around.

Thu, 03 May 2012 03:14:00 -0700 241 Concepts http://loxyreid.posterous.com/241-concepts http://loxyreid.posterous.com/241-concepts

Concept 1

My first idea, based on Theo Jansen's sand walkers was to create a walker myself. I based it loosely on the weird head/spider toy from Toy Story 1. I remember it being a really scary concept and I wanted to play on that. By using similar techniques of moving limbs that Theo has used I could create a really interesting mobile character. This character would have been a rogue creation from a craftsmen, or kid, and have to explore its surroundings, perhaps try and reach a place which it cannot access.

Concept 2

My second concept was similar to the first in that I wanted to take a creation and put it in an environment. This character was based off a crafts manequin and I used a lot of steam punk infulences to create artificial limbs and intelligence for it. The idea behind this character was for it to wake up on a captain's desk, see a strange light (inspired by AWOLnations Sail video) and attempt to reach it. However, it would end in devastation.

Concept 3

My talking to the tutors and discussing the difference between inanimate and animate I decided to not focus on creating a humanoid character but to focus on just seperate limbs. I already had a mock storyboard done up for a humourous wily coyote esque situation where a character would open a door, so I decided to go with a hand instead of a foot. The hand was the obvious choice but I thought the foot would lead to less interesting situations within the given environment. This hand was also mechanicalized, to suit the steam punk theme from the last concept.

Thu, 19 Apr 2012 21:37:00 -0700 Theo Jansen http://loxyreid.posterous.com/theo-jansen http://loxyreid.posterous.com/theo-jansen

I've decided to look at Theo Jansen's work as a precendednt for Project 2.

Out of the four given artists and architects I found that Theo's work was more exciting for me to look at than the others.

Things I like about his work-

1. Materials are very basic, using tubing, rope, ties and plastic. This is neat because it shows how very basic simple everyday materials can be taken from their usual use and combined to create new life. Note that there are no electronic parts, which means that the life is created without the use of artificial life. I can bring this into my own work by looking at combining simple materials rather than making complex ones.

2. Forms are crazy and wild. We would not think of shapes like this as new beings or creatures. They are quite rigid and non fluid when static but when the machine begins to move it can be quite fluid and soothing to watch. This can be incorporated by having smoother flowing parts on my character.

3.
